What is Inclusive Access and how does it work with Soomo?

How students access their digital course materials with an Inclusive Access program

Written by Alyssa

Inclusive Access (IA) programs (also known as First Day Access, Day One Access, or affordability programs) allow students to access required digital course materials at the start of the term without purchasing them individually. The cost is typically included in tuition or course fees through the school or campus bookstore.

If you’re using your school’s IA program for your course, Soomo works with your bookstore or its digital materials provider to make your webtext available to students.

How students access their webtext

The process for delivering access depends on your institution’s Inclusive Access program. Most Soomo courses use one of two methods.

  • If your program uses passkeys: Students receive an access code (passkey) provided through their Learning Management System (LMS) or sent via email from the bookstore. Students enter this passkey in their webtext to activate full access.

  • If your program uses direct access: In some programs, students receive access without entering a passkey. They simply need to follow the webtext link in their LMS to get started.

Managing student opt-outs

If a student opts out of the Inclusive Access program, their webtext access is disabled.

If the student still needs access to complete their coursework, they’ll need to purchase access independently. The process depends on the type of Inclusive Access program your institution uses.

  • If your program uses passkeys: Students will need to purchase a standard passkey through the campus bookstore.

  • If your program uses direct access: The purchase process depends on the program. Students should follow the instructions provided by their school, which may direct them to purchase access through Soomo.

Because opt-out processes can vary, direct students to their school’s bookstore if they’re unsure how to regain access.
