How do polls work in the webtext?

Understanding how students interact with polls within webtext and how to view the data

Written by Alyssa

Poll questions are embedded throughout our webtexts. They’re specifically placed in areas that will help students connect to chapter content.

Polls can be used to spark class discussion or as a starting point for lessons focused on data literacy and public opinion.

Finding all polls in a webtext

Students encounter polls as they appear throughout the webtext. For instructors, an Index of Polls is available at the bottom of the webtext’s Table of Contents.

Open webtext Table of Contents with an arrow pointing to the Contents button and a box highlighting the Index of Polls and Response Boards option in the list.

The index provides a list of each poll in the webtext, along with a link to the corresponding page.

Answering poll questions

To respond to a poll, students select their response and then click Save. Once students respond, they’ll see the breakdown of their classmates’ aggregated responses.

Student responses to polls are anonymous to their peers and instructors.

Comparison polls

In some polls, the class response is then compared to a larger regional or national dataset.

These questions come from statewide or national polls, so students can see their responses (and those of their classmates) alongside those larger populations.

Viewing and downloading data

Polls display results as either bar charts or pie charts, depending on the type of comparison the authors intend students to make.

Polls display results as bar charts. They also include a data table that you and your students can access by clicking the Data tab within the poll. From this view, the poll results can be downloaded as a CSV file.
