Learn how to record student speeches given in class

Written by Alyssa

You can use the Soomo video recorder to capture and submit student speeches during class from a single device. Each speech is recorded under the selected student’s name and appears in the activity as a student submission.

If you’d like to set up activities where you can give real-time feedback during presentations, visit our Hosting Live Review sessions collection.

Locate the activity

1. Open the webtext’s Table of Contents and select Index of Speech Assignments.

2. Click the speech assignment name to navigate to that page of the webtext.

Note: For student names to appear in the selection list, they must have opened the speech assignment page in the webtext at least once.

6. Review the recording instructions and click Continue. In the next window that appears, click Continue to Recorder.

7. The Soomo video recorder will check your camera and microphone to make sure you are ready to record. If needed, use the gear icon in the equipment check window to select the camera and microphone you’d like to use.

Once your camera and microphone pass the equipment check, click Continue.

If you’re using Chrome and receive a message that GoReact needs access to your camera and microphone, try entering fullscreen mode and completing the equipment check again. The fullscreen option is located in the upper-left corner of the recorder.

If you need to update your camera or microphone selections before recording, select the gear icon in the lower-left corner of the recorder. If the gear icon is not visible, widen the recorder panel until it appears.

9. When the speech is over, select Stop in the lower left of the recorder. Once the video preview appears, choose how to proceed:

  • Restart to record again.

  • Delete to remove the recording.

  • Save draft to return to it later.

  • Submit to submit the recording.

10. When you select Submit, the video will upload and the thumbnail will appear in the main recorder view.

The student’s name will be displayed on the thumbnail, confirming that the video was submitted under the correct student.

You can then repeat these steps for each student in the class.

Tip: Recording sessions can be created ahead of time using the Save draft option in Step 9. Follow the steps above to open the recorder, then start a recording and save it as a draft. On the day of the speech, open the draft, restart the recording, and continue from there.
