With Live Review activities in the Soomo video recorder, students can present their speeches live and get feedback from instructors and classmates, both during and after the activity. Our article, How do I create Live Review sessions in the Soomo video recorder?, will walk you through the steps to set up the activity.

Once you’ve created the Live Review sessions for a speech activity, students will join the sessions as participants (students giving the speech) or observers (those watching and giving feedback). Since they will be giving their speeches live, you will need to coordinate activity times and presentation order outside of the webtext, e.g., through course announcements or during a Zoom meeting.

You can also use Live Review sessions to record speeches given live during class or via Zoom (or other video conferencing platforms). When it’s their turn to present, students will enter the Live Review session in the video recorder and start the recording. For Zoom presentations, both the Zoom meeting and the webtext need to be open.

Classmates can then either join the Live Review session as observers to give live feedback through their webtext or watch the presentation without joining the session.

All Live Review recordings are saved in the video recorder for later review.

Locate the activity

To begin, students will log in to their webtext and navigate to the desired Live Review activity. The Index of Speech Assignments at the bottom of the webtext’s Table of Contents will help students easily locate a particular activity.

Students will then join the Live Review session as a participant or observer.

As a participant

When it’s a student’s turn to present, they will follow these steps:

1. Join the session: The student will click Join on their own session in the main view of the video recorder, then click Join as Participant in the pop-up that appears.

2. Start the Live Review session: Once they are ready to begin their speech, the presenter will click the Record button in the bottom left of the video recorder. This will start streaming their video to the observers.

If a student needs to take a break when recording, they can click the Pause button in the bottom left. Observers can still see and hear them, but nothing during this time will be recorded or saved. When they’re ready, the student will click Resume to begin recording again.

3. End the recording: When a student is finished with their speech, they will click the Stop button in the bottom left. A pop-up will appear where they can add a title if they’d like, then click Post to submit their recording or Delete to archive or delete it.

As an observer

Observers will follow a slightly different process to take part in the Live Review session:

1. Join the session: Observers will click Join on the session of the student who is presenting.

2. Wait for the presentation to begin: If the presenter hasn’t yet begun recording, a pop-up will appear letting observers know they need to wait for the presentation to begin. If the presenter has already started recording when an observer joins, the pop-up will not appear and the observer will begin viewing the presentation right away.

3. Watch and give feedback: When the presenter begins recording, the waiting pop-up will close automatically. Observers can then watch the live presentation and provide real-time feedback using markers and comments in the video recorder.
