How can I review a student’s writing timeline in Analytics?

See how students write, edit, and add source notes in open-ended questions

Overview

The Activity History feature in Analytics provides a record of all work a student completes in their webtext, including multiple-choice question attempts and written responses.

For open-ended assessment items, like response boards, writing templates, and short-answer questions, the Activity History also includes a detailed writing timeline. The timeline logs typing, deletions, edits, and other drafting events, giving you insight into how a student developed their response.

Viewing writing timelines

To view a writing timeline in Analytics, click Activity History beneath an open-ended question.

Responses containing pasted text or rapid typing will be noted beside the Activity History drop-down so you can quickly identify responses that may need a closer look.

Understanding timeline events

Expanding the Activity History reveals a timeline of events detailing the student’s drafting process, including standard writing activity and flagged events.

Standard writing activity

As a student works through an open-ended question, the timeline automatically logs regular typing, deletions, edits, and posted or unposted submissions.

Rapid typing and paste events

The webtext prompts students to note the source of any pasted text or typing that exceeds 180 words per minute (WPM), which can occur with text injection from spellcheckers, productivity apps, and AI-powered browser extensions.

The prompt asks students to note where the text came from.

A pop-up modal titled “Add a source note” with a text box for entering citation details or tools used. It includes a reminder about course policies and buttons to “Undo change” or “Add source.”

If the student selects Undo change in the source prompt (or closes/refreshes the page), the added text is removed. Neither the addition nor the undo action will appear in their writing timeline.

If the student provides a source note, the added text is saved and labeled in the timeline as “Pasted” or “Typed >180 WPM.” Their note appears directly below the entry as “Provided source.”
