How do I use instructor guides?

Planning your class time with aligned summaries, data, and active learning activities

Written by Alyssa

Instructor guides help you bring chapter content into the classroom. They’re designed to support you in planning in-class discussions and activities that align with the reading.

Instructor guides are currently available in Psychology in the Real World, Biology: Life at Every Level, Sociology: You Are Here, Texas Politics, Central Ideas in American Government, and Civics Reader.

Accessing instructor guides

You can find instructor guides at the bottom of your webtext’s Table of Contents. Click the instructor-only section titled Instructor Guides to expand it and view the guides available for each chapter.

At the start of each instructor guide, you will find the following:

  • a brief overview of the topics covered in the webtext chapter

  • quick links to chapter-specific resources, such as lecture slides and the Analytics dashboard

Using Analytics to plan instruction

By clicking the Analytics link provided in the guide, you can review student completion of webtext questions, time spent on each page and in each chapter, and performance on questions before class time. The end-of-chapter quiz pages are a great place to look.

You can use this data to tailor your in-class instruction and activities. The guide includes a range of activities to give students additional practice on concepts they found more challenging.

For more information on using Analytics, visit our Analytics Help Center collection.

Engaging students with active learning

Each guide offers a range of discussion prompts and longer-form activities designed to more deeply engage students with the content and in the learning process.

Because the activities align with the webtext, students who complete the reading should come to class with the background knowledge needed to meaningfully participate.

The activities are also highly flexible, allowing you to adapt them to your students. All prompts can be used to either reinforce key ideas (through instructor modeling) or extend student thinking (by prompting students to do more of the cognitive work).

Evaluating generative AI

If you are interested in incorporating generative AI into your course, the guides offer sample AI prompts and output-analysis questions related to each chapter’s content.

Students can enter the prompt into a generative AI tool and then use the provided analysis questions to critically evaluate the output of the tool.

These prompts are tied directly to the chapter content, ensuring students can use the knowledge they just gained from the webtext to assess the AI’s accuracy and relevance.
