The backward design framework
Our learning designers and Editorial team use a backward design process to build all of our original webtexts (Wiggins and McTighe, 2005). The first step is to define the learning outcomes: what students need to know and be able to do by the end of the course. We use major disciplinary frameworks and input from professors on our advisory boards to identify these outcomes.
From there, we determine the best way to collect evidence of that learning. Finally, we design the scaffolded content and experiences to guide students toward those goals.
Frequent formative assessment
To help students master concepts and build confidence, formative assessments are embedded on almost every page. Students answer multiple-choice questions as they read, receiving immediate feedback to instantly address misconceptions.
In most webtexts, each question functions as a pool, giving students multiple attempts to apply feedback and try again. Completed questions are also added to Study Stack, an interactive review tool that lets students practice recalling concepts without impacting their scores.
Note: Study Stack is currently available in select webtexts.
Aligned instructor resources
The webtext is built to support learning outcomes, and the included instructor resources are closely aligned with the webtext content to reinforce those goals.
Analytics: Use data from formative assessments to identify patterns, spot learning gaps, and make data-driven instructional decisions before class.
Instructor guides: Access suggested discussion questions and active learning activities mapped to the core concepts and principles of each chapter.
Lecture slides: Download ready-to-use slides that highlight key concepts and provide in-class opportunities for students to check their understanding.
Test banks: Build exams with confidence. Test bank questions are aligned directly with the concepts students practiced in the webtext, ensuring a cohesive testing experience with no surprises.
